From there, I shifted my focus to re-writing my resume for consulting job postings. I shared the document with the Career Management group and 2nd year students who had been through the recruiting process the year prior. Their feedback was unanimous. I wasn’t being specific with my examples, I wasn’t writing “action” oriented statements, and I failed to show the impact I had in my examples. That, and my resume was 2 pages long.
A common mistake is to list out your roles and responsibilities - no consultant cares about that! Instead they want to know that you are a leader, you are analytical, your work results in real impact, and you have a history of achievement. For example, I worked two years as sonar researcher before entering consulting - clearly my past responsibilities had no relationship to consulting. The firms interviewing me didn't care about my research work;they wanted to gauge my achievements, track record, and analytical ability. So do NOT list out your responsibilites.
